1. Who I am

Ethical Endurance is a personal blog about sustainable and ethical endurance sports products, run by Barnaby Coupe based in the United Kingdom.

Website: https://ethicalendurance.co.uk Email: ethicalendurance@protonmail.com

For the purposes of data protection law, I am the data controller — meaning I decide how and why your personal data is processed.

2. What this policy covers

This policy explains what personal data I collect when you visit the Ethical Endurance website, why I collect it, who I share it with, how long I keep it, and what rights you have over it. I've tried to write it in plain English. If anything is unclear, please get in touch.

3. What data I collect and why

3.1 Website analytics

This site uses Ghost's built-in, first-party analytics to understand how visitors interact with the content — for example, which pages are most read and where traffic comes from. These analytics are cookie-free and do not use any persistent browser storage to identify you. Unique visitors are counted within 24-hour windows. Analytics data is stored in EU regions by Ghost(Pro).

Legal basis: Legitimate interest (understanding how the site is used in order to improve it).

Because these analytics do not use cookies or collect personal data beyond what is needed to serve the page, they do not require your consent under UK cookie rules.

3.2 Email newsletter and subscriber data

Our email newsletter is managed and sent using Ghost’s built-in newsletter functionality, which is part of the Ghost(Pro) hosted platform operated by Ghost Foundation Ltd. When you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect and process the following personal data:

•  Your email address

•  Your name (if provided)

•  The date and time of your subscription

•  Your IP address at the time of subscription (for security and verification purposes)

We use this data to send you our newsletter, manage your subscription, and provide any member-only content. The legal basis for this processing is your consent (Article 6(1)(a) UK GDPR), which you provide when you subscribe. You may withdraw your consent at any time by clicking the “unsubscribe” link included in every newsletter, or by contacting us at ethicalendurance@protonmail.com. Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of any processing carried out before withdrawal.

Legal basis: Your consent. You actively sign up via the email form, and you can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every email.

Email Analytics: Our newsletter service includes email open tracking and link click tracking. This means we can see whether a newsletter email was opened and which links within it were clicked. We use this information solely to understand how our content is performing and to improve future newsletters. This tracking is carried out by Ghost as part of the newsletter service and uses a small tracking pixel embedded in each email. If you do not wish to be tracked in this way, you may unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time.

Your subscriber data is stored by Ghost Foundation Ltd as our data processor. We have a Data Processing Agreement (DPA) in place with Ghost, which is incorporated into their Terms of Service and is publicly available at ghost.org/dpa. Ghost will not share your personal data with unauthorised third parties.

If you unsubscribe from our newsletter, your email address will be removed from our active mailing list. It may be retained on a suppression list to ensure you do not receive further emails from us, in accordance with our legitimate interest in complying with your unsubscribe request (Article 6(1)(f) UK GDPR).

3.3 Where your data is stored

Our website and newsletter are hosted by Ghost Foundation Ltd using their Ghost(Pro) hosted service. Your personal data, including subscriber information, is stored on servers located within the European Union.

In certain circumstances, Ghost Foundation may process personal data outside the EU/UK — for example, when providing support and maintenance services. Where such transfers take place, Ghost ensures an adequate level of data protection through the use of Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) as part of their Data Processing Agreement, in compliance with UK GDPR requirements.

3.4 Affiliate links (AWIN)

Some links on this site may be affiliate links provided through the AWIN affiliate network. If you click an affiliate link, AWIN places a cookie on your device to track whether a purchase is made, so that any commission can be attributed correctly. I do not receive any personal data about you from AWIN — only aggregated reports on clicks and sales.

The AWIN cookie collects: a click reference (which link you clicked), the date and time of the click, and whether a purchase was subsequently made.

Legal basis: Consent. The AWIN tracking cookie is non-essential and is only placed with your consent via the cookie banner.

AWIN acts as a joint controller for the data it processes through its tracking cookies. You can read AWIN's privacy policy at https://www.awin.com/gb/legal/privacy-policy-gb.

3.5 Contact form and email

If you contact me by email or through a contact form, I collect whatever information you choose to include in your message (typically your name and email address). I use this only to respond to your enquiry.

Legal basis: Legitimate interest (responding to a message you have sent me).

4. Cookies

This site uses very few cookies. Ghost's built-in analytics are entirely cookie-free.

Essential cookies — Ghost uses a small number of functional cookies to manage membership logins and site functionality. These are required for the site to work and do not require your consent.

Affiliate cookies (AWIN) — If you click an affiliate link, AWIN places a tracking cookie to attribute any subsequent purchase. This is a non-essential cookie and is only placed with your consent. When you first visit the site, a cookie banner will ask whether you consent to this. You can change your preference at any time by [clicking the cookie settings link in the footer / describe your method], or by managing cookies through your browser settings.

If you decline the AWIN cookie, the site will still work normally — affiliate clicks simply won't be tracked.

5. Who I share your data with

I do not sell your personal data to anyone. The only third parties who process data in connection with this site are:

Ghost(Pro) — blog hosting, membership management, email newsletter delivery. Stores email addresses, names, IP addresses, and analytics data. EU servers. See https://ghost.org/privacy/.

AWIN — affiliate link tracking. Places a cookie on click to track purchases. EU/UK servers. See https://www.awin.com/gb/legal/privacy-policy-gb.

Where data is transferred outside the UK, the transfers are protected by the safeguards described above. If those safeguards change, I will update this policy.

6. How long I keep your data

Newsletter subscribers: your email address is kept for as long as you remain subscribed. If you unsubscribe, your data is deleted within 30 days.

Membership data: retained by Ghost for as long as your membership is active.

Affiliate cookies: AWIN cookies expire after 30 days.

Contact emails: kept for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry, and deleted within 12 months of our last exchange.

7. Your rights

Under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018), you have the following rights:

Right of access — you can ask me for a copy of the personal data I hold about you.

Right to rectification — you can ask me to correct any personal data that is inaccurate or incomplete.

Right to erasure — you can ask me to delete your personal data, where there is no compelling reason for me to continue processing it.

Right to restrict processing — you can ask me to temporarily stop processing your data in certain circumstances.

Right to data portability — you can ask me to provide your data in a structured, commonly used format so you can transfer it to another provider.

Right to object — you can object to processing based on legitimate interest. If you object, I will stop processing unless I can demonstrate compelling grounds.

Right to withdraw consent — where I process data based on your consent (e.g. newsletter sign-up, AWIN cookie), you can withdraw that consent at any time. This won't affect the lawfulness of any processing carried out before you withdrew consent.

To exercise any of these rights, email me at ethicalendurance@protonmail.com. I will respond within one month.

Complaints

If you are unhappy with how I have handled your data, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's supervisory authority for data protection:

Website: https://ico.org.uk Telephone: 0303 123 1113

I would appreciate the chance to address any concerns directly before you contact the ICO, but you are of course entitled to do so at any time.

8. Children's privacy

This site is not directed at children under the age of 16. I do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has provided me with personal data, please contact me and I will delete it.

9. Links to other websites

This site contains links to other websites, including brands I review, affiliate partners, and external resources. I am not responsible for the privacy practices of other sites.

10. Changes to this policy

I may update this privacy policy from time to time. If I make significant changes, I will update the date at the top of this page and notify newsletter subscribers by email.

11. Contact

If you have any questions about this privacy policy or how I handle your data:
